Pinot Noir vs. Cabernet Sauvignon: Which Wine Is Right for You?

Pinot Noir vs. Cabernet Sauvignon: Which Wine Is Right for You?

One of the questions we hear almost every day in our tasting room is, "What's the difference between Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon?" It's a great question, but after helping thousands of guests choose the right bottle over the years, I've learned the answer usually isn't just about the wine—it's about the person drinking it.

When someone asks me which wine they should buy, I don't usually start talking about tannins or acidity. Instead, I ask a few simple questions. Are you having steak tonight or pizza? Are you looking for something to sip on the patio, or are you serving a big dinner? Who are you sharing it with? Are they seasoned wine drinkers, someone just beginning to explore wine, or maybe even a beer drinker? Those answers tell me far more than asking what wine they normally drink.

If someone is new to red wine, I'll usually pour our Pinot Noir first. Oregon is known around the world for Pinot Noir, particularly from the Willamette Valley, and I think every visitor should experience what makes Oregon Pinot Noir so special. What many people don't realize is that Southern Oregon produces incredible Pinot Noir as well. Because of our warm, sunny days and cool evenings, we're able to consistently ripen the fruit to its full potential. The style is often a little richer, a little bolder, and a bit more fruit-forward than many Willamette Valley Pinots, while still being unmistakably Oregon. It's approachable, smooth, and one of those wines that often surprises people.

One of my favorite moments in the tasting room is hearing someone say, "Wow... I actually like that. I wasn't expecting it to be that smooth." Those are the moments that remind us why we love introducing people to wine. It doesn't have to be intimidating. Sometimes it just takes one great glass to change someone's mind.

The same thing happens with our Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that Oregon doesn't grow great Cabernet. Most people immediately think of Napa Valley when they think about Cabernet Sauvignon. Then they taste ours. Southern Oregon's warm climate gives Cabernet the sunshine it needs to fully ripen, while our cool nights help preserve balance and freshness. Guests are often surprised at how well Cabernet grows here, and many leave with an entirely new appreciation for Southern Oregon wine.

So which one should you choose?

If you're bringing a bottle to a party and aren't quite sure what everyone likes, I'd almost always recommend Pinot Noir. It's one of those wines that appeals to a wide range of people, whether they're longtime wine lovers or just beginning to explore red wine. It's also a wonderful choice if you're taking a bottle home from your Oregon vacation. Pinot Noir is our state's signature grape, and it makes a memorable reminder of your time here.

If you're planning a steak dinner, firing up the grill, or serving a rich meal with mashed potatoes and great sides, Cabernet Sauvignon is hard to beat. It's also a fun wine to pour for friends who love California Cabernet but have never experienced one from Oregon. Watching someone discover that Southern Oregon grows exceptional Cabernet is a reminder that great wine can come from unexpected places.

Food has a fun way of changing the way we experience wine. While Pinot Noir is wonderful with salmon—a classic Northwest pairing—it also shines with something as simple as a wood-fired pizza. Cabernet certainly loves a great steak, but one of our favorite unexpected pairings is Korean BBQ. And if you're feeling adventurous, try it with a maple bacon doughnut sometime. Trust me, it's a combination people remember.

More than anything, I hope visitors leave Del Rio with a new appreciation for what Southern Oregon has to offer. Yes, Oregon is famous for Pinot Noir, and rightfully so. But we also grow world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and many other varietals that thrive in our unique climate. As the largest vineyard and winery in Southern Oregon, we're proud to showcase the incredible diversity of wines that can be grown here.

Most of all, I hope people remember how we made them feel. We're a small, family-owned winery that cares deeply about the land, the people who work here, and every guest who walks through our doors. Wine should never feel intimidating. It's meant to be shared with family around the dinner table, enjoyed with friends over a backyard barbecue, or opened simply because it's a beautiful evening.

So, when someone asks me whether they should choose Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon, my answer is usually pretty simple. Let's talk about where you're headed, who's joining you, and what you're serving for dinner. Once I know that, finding the right bottle is the easy part.

If you're ever traveling through Southern Oregon, I hope you'll stop by Del Rio Vineyards. We'd love to pour you both wines, hear your story, and maybe even introduce you to a new favorite.

Cheers  -
